He says: "Process and decay are implicit" and "Each work grows, stays and decays- integral parts of a cycle." and "Nature is in a state of change and that change is the key to understanding. He is interested in how his works follow the same cycle as nature over time. He also focuses on the way that nature grows, stays and decays. Such as the change of seasons or weather causing the artwork to expire or changing certain aspects of it. Andy Goldsworthy understands that nature is changing constantly, and therefore he is interesting in change/movement, within nature, over time and the way that it interacts with his work. The second way that Goldsworthy uses elements of time in his work is the way that he focuses on movement/change and growth and decay. This adds different kinds of meaning to the artwork depending on the time that it has been displayed and how long it will be able to be displayed. The audience is forced to think about the meaning of the artwork, in terms of the time that it has been created and displayed. The ephemeral nature of his artworks causes the audience to appreciate the works in the dimension of time. Goldsworthy uses elements of time in his work in two different ways.

Unlike many traditional artists, Goldsworthy focusses on common found objects in nature and small local scenes, rather than a large spectacular scene. His creative processes can be seen as a reaction against traditional forms and conventions of art because of his unique ways of dealing with nature. Goldsworthy's artworks are primarily focussed on nature and issues regarding nature and he attempts to understand nature by participating in it.
